How much oil do you add when you change your oil and filter?

Let's see if everyone is filling up their engine to the proper level not just going by the dipstick.

Lay it out guys and be honest, how much oil do you add?

I have always wondered about this. When I first got my 93 I put just shy of 5 qts in. Considering the engine, remote filter and oil cooler I assumed this was close, but wondered if I was overfilling. The GM service manual I bought later on says 4.5 qts so I have been running that since. One thing, if we are to add 5 qts it will put the level over the full mark, even witht the filter full. Would be nice if there was another mark on the dipstick so you could monitor this.

well i dump 4.5 into the crank case, then it takes atleast a qtr of the bottle to prime the filter proporly, instead of inserting it dry

This is true, but you go buy the amount of oil you are supposed to put in, not what the dipstick tells you.

You see, you are believing the dip stick too much.

Use the amount in the owners manual.

Your right Lt.
I supose that we should all put the right mark on our dipstick after the oil change, so we know where it should be in between the oil changes

Re: How much oil do you add when you change your oil and filter?

Here's a question.

My engine oil is so clear for a while after the oil change that i can only see it in the perfect light (with perfect vision) I have to drag my thumb down the dipstick to find the level

Does anyone have any tips that I can do?

Re: How much oil do you add when you change your oil and filter?

Just tip it up so the light reflects off of it.

But if you add the amount oil in your manual, you really don't need to worry about it.
