Overstyled POS!

Today, I saw a new '05 Rolls Royce Phantom in town (Toronto)

http://www.rrab.com/rphantom.htm#top

This is the first one I have seen here. Only 285 have been made, worldwide.
There are lots of new Aston Martins, Ferraris, Maseratis and Bentleys in downtown Toronto, but this is the first time I have seen someone spend more than $375 000 for a car that wasn't a high buck Ferrari.

This RR is HUGE. It goes down the road like a Lincoln Navigator. Its as tall as an SUV, takes up the whole lane, is quite long and dwarfs everything around it.

Still, I am NOT impressed. It's ugly, ostentatious, crass and tasteless.

For that money one can have a garage full of really terrific cars that are faster, better handling, MUCH more attractive and probgably more comfortable. All this RR tells the public is who has more money than sense and tells the terrorists who is worth kidnapping.

Meh. I've seen those before. Last time I saw one was at the outback steakhouse. Don't know why he was eating there.

Re: Overstyled POS!

I think they are beautifully designed. Huge does not necessarily translate into ugly. You want huge and ugly? Take a look at the Maybach. Yep, that's the difference between taste and money right there. I was at Pebble Beach, Monterey a year ago, doing security for a huge car show there. Maybach and RR were both on site, trying to sell their cars. Guess what? They sold 12 Rolls' in one week, and only 1 Maybach.

These cars have a very massive, majestic presence. I have seen them up close, and they have so many subtle touches, you'd be knocked off your feet. The hood ornament swivles out of sight to be stored under the hood while the car is parked, if you want. The "RR" symbols on the rims do not rotate with the tire as it moves...they simply float. The front end is so intimidating and brilliantly constructed. It fullfills its purpose: to strike you with awe. The new Chrylser 300C is also an excellent timeless design, that will always look good. You have to look at these cars in person to appreciate just what they are. And yeah, the RR is fcking HUGE. I don't know what size tires they were running, since the ratings were European on the sidewall, not the P xxx/xx/R x designation, so I couldnt figure then out, but they looked like they were taken off a semi!

I don't really like the new Phantom.

The following is from from Wagner, Rob L. "Classic Cars" page 89:

"The Rolls-Royce was not a particularly stylish car, reflecting the image of a conservative, well-mannered Englishman. And Rolls-Royce management disaproved of ostentatious designs by zealous coach builders."

Re: Overstyled POS!

I think the car looks great. It has real road presence and the build quality is meant to be out of this world. With so few being made they are reasonably exclusive but having said that Simon Cowell has just bought two, so that might make them less appealing!! Still a very beautiful car but not in the same way that a Ferrari is beautiful!

the people who buy these cars couldn't care less about it's handling and acceleration (even though it still can hit 60 in only 5.7s). in fact, very few of the people that buy these will ever actually drive it themselves. that's the chauffuer's job. they buy RR's for it's prestige, history and commanding presence. you can go anywhere, no matter how exclusive and anybody who sees you drive up (or being driven up by your chauffuer most likely) will know that you are somebody important.

and no, i doubt you could buy anything, no matter how expensive, that is more comfortable or more luxurious than a RR.

Re: Overstyled POS!

but just for the record, i also would prefer a bentley. it's more of a driver's car and less of a british royalty's limo.
