I just got a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Pretty nice, but before I bought it, the latch for the rear glass hatch wasn't working(wouldn't open the glass hatch). Well, they agreed to fix it and they did, but the latch doesn't lock at all when you lock up the car, so you could actually break into it, by merely opening the latch, and crawling in the back. Does anybody know how the glass hatch lock is supposed to work, what the problem is and how to fix this? I'd appreciate it(obvioulsy I don't want to leave it like that). Thanx.

There is a small electric microswitch located on the main liftgate latch inside the hatch door. This not locking indicates a short between the two wires attached to this switch. Commonly, the small rivets holding this on the main latch corode and the switch falls loose, causing the liftgate to always think the lock is activated. Cutting the wires and twisting them together fools it to think the lock is always off. Most likely this is how they "fixed" the not working condition. Only easy fix is to replace the main liftgate latch handle assembly.

Are you talking about the main liftgate itself, or the seperate liftglass? My main liftgate/tailgate locks, and unlocks fine, it's just the liftglass itself thats not locking, so whatever reason. How does that lock work, and how do you fix that? Thanx again!

The microswitch is attached to the main latch and senses if the main lock is on or off. Depending on this condition it allows the selenoid for the liftglass to function or not. This microswitch on mine fell loose from the main latch and the glass would not open anymore. I also fixed it by twisting the two wires together and taping them. Now, as you note, the liftgate button is never locked and functions all the time. Not a big deal out here in rural upstate NY. As the liftgate button is kinda hidden, I suspect someone would try the regular handles and decide the vehicle must be locked before finding the glass release.
