Oil Change mess

I have a 97 Explorer XLT 4.0 SOHC. I change my own oil and as you know, when you let the plug go, the oil goes all over the frame and gets everywhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions to drain the oil into the pan without getting it everywhere? I have tried the fram sure drain but don't like it.

Just to add. Read thru this post (it's long but very good info) and you might be able to find a discount code that still works. Even if you don't the $$ you pay is well worth it. Get the one with the nipple, it comes in handy.

This is not a cheap piece like the Fram. You'll be very pleased, I know I was (and still am every 3,000)

A trick I learned at the dealership! Flatten the oil filter box and use it to redirect the stream into the pan!

I have been changing oil in my 97 (bought new) with same engine as yours. I am able to do it without jacking up the SUV. I use a wide mouth drain pan and also have a 4' x 6' galv flat drip pan that I have had for years just in case. I don't have the problem that you are having with the drain pan.

However, when the filter is removed, thats where the running over the frame occurs for me. Any suggestions with the oil filter?

By the way, it just tripped 203,000 miles and is still going strong using Castrol from the beginning.
