I have a 2000 GC Ltd. Lately on overcast days, the automatic headlights come on and go off intermittently like it can't decide whether it's dark or not. It seems like this happens mostly when I put my blinker on. This morning, the lights came on while the Jeep was just sitting in the driveway. Has anyone else experienced this?

"he lights came on while the Jeep was just sitting in the driveway"
Are you saying that you did not have th keys in the jeep at all before this happened? The lights will go on and off depending on how much light is going into the sensor, the jeep dose not take into account how many times it's turned it's lights on, it only knows when it's time to turn them off and on. It's not that smart.......yet. But if your telling us that the lights go on and off by it's self 10 min after you drive it, then you may have a problem. If it upsets you that it's not smart enough to know better turn the switch on and off, and leave it off "auto". |

The lights didn't come on 10 mins after I had driven it. It sat in the driveway all night long and the lights came on by themselves sometime in the morning. There was no human intervention.

Re: automatic lights
SNAP!
Yep you have a problem, and it sounds like a short, it may be in the headlight switch it's self or the relay that controls power to the light. Thats a good one, does it do it when the switch is turned off the Auto, and turned on the Off position? |

Re: automatic lights
I have just started having the same problem with my 2000 GC. I am going to be at work tomorrow and I will pull a wiring schematic for this system. As soon as I pinpoint the problem I will post solution. I am wondering if it is the BCM having issues? Hopefully not. If anyone has any other input I would greatly appreciate it.

Re: automatic lights
I can pretty much guarantee that it is the switch. It is a very common problem

Re: automatic lights
I had this same problem. It was a bad battery. Replaced it and haven't had any problems in over 3 years. So before you get into replacing switches, have the battery checked first.

Re: automatic lights
I am just having a problem in my 93 GC that the sensor works and turns on the dash lights but not the head lights. I have to manually do it with the switch. I noticed that one of the parking lights in the front is burned out. Would that make the system not work? Is it that smart?

Did the headlamps turn automatically?,(2) uncover the ultralight sensor ,did the head lights turn off? (3)leave the head ligths swithc on "Auto " turn the winshield wiper "ON " did the head lights turn on automatically?(4) turn the head light off . did the head lights turn off? is you see all this discrepancy you probable have a problem with the day time run lights, check the untralights sensors O think this is the problem in your jeep, make sure the doors lock and unlock are working properly too, , chane the battery in your keyless too. good luck dornier34

Re: automatic lights
I have a 93 jgc and the auto lights turn on but everything comes on except the headlights. Is there a relay that might have a bad contact? Where are the relays for this located. One time it did come on and then the next time it didn't.
Thanks |

Re: automatic lights
HI there , ok the relays is located under the dash board passenger side , make sure got the power to the relay from the battery, check the relay is cliking when you giving a 12 volts power and ground terminals from the relay, check fuses, if everything is working fine take out the swicht light this is easy to take out and desasembly cleaned up spraying with electric contact cleaner ,lube with the contact point with small amount if vaseline and put back together check if it's working let me know the results ckeck the daytime run light one of the sensor is not working porperly too, Other thing you can do is try to interchange the relays mosly the relays are the samein the systems take one who is next to the head light relay and change with other one who is next to this one and see what happen if oyu see is working you know waht is the problem do this before you get a new relay

I can hear the relay clicking and when it is dark and the dash lights and everything else come on via the auto sensor I have tried rotating the light switch back and forth to see if the contacts might become active and still nothing. When I do that you can hear the relay since all the dash lights and everything are going through.
I will pull the light switch and check it out. Thanks |
