fuel pump question ????

helo everyone,,,,is it normal to hear a slight hummm from the fuel pump.when i first bought my 95' about two years ago it suddenly started making a noticeable humming sound..shortly after i needed to replace the pump..all was fine until i had the recall done..after installing the new fuel rail they got dirt or something in the injectors..they had the car most of the day cleaning the injectors out..the mechanic took the car for a 50 mile test drive to make sure all was ok..when i picked the car up,i was about half way home and the low fuel warning came on..they left the car right on empty...i made it to the closest gas station when i again herd that humming sound from the fuel pump.from that day on it has made the humming sound..shortly after it began stuttering during accelration..this would go away for two or three months then start up again..so back to my original question.is it normal to hear a slight humming from the fuel pump??? or is this new pump on the way out again ??? thanks everyone

No, you should not be hearing the pump. I've had two other GM cars before my Olds. A that humming is usually an idication that you might be nneding to look at a replacement pump. Then again, it may never go despite the fact that it's making strange noises. Definatly check it out. But, don't take it to a dealer. In that case, you'd be buying the pump whether or not you needed it.

Do a search in the forum. I did a quick search and found 80 or 90 fuel pump related issues.

Good Luck

thanks for the response,,,,i was near a olds dealership this afternoon and i had a mechanic listen to this mumming sound...he opened the trunk and put his head on the floor of the trunk..he was 100% sure the humming sound was from the fuel pump....he said it's not good news for the pump when you hear that sound..another mechanic happened to be walking by at this time and said it's not really that un-common to hear a fuel pump humm and have the vechicle run fine for several years...im just curious how many aurora owners can hear the fuel pump humming,,especially from inside the trunk..my stuttering problem seemed to occur the same day this sound started....

I guess you have a choice to make. But, just because hearing noise from the fuel pump is not un-common, it doesn't mean it's right. He would proably say it's not un-common even if he meant that the fuel pump in Aurora's tend to go bad. It's normal to hear the pump click on if you turn to the ACC position. But, the louder the hum, the worse off the pump is.

Re: fuel pump question ????

is your gas gauge wacky? if so then a new FP will fix that too - the FP and the sendee come together as a unit.

Re: fuel pump question ????

Ive had quite a few different cars in my 20+ years of driving and Ive been able to hear the electric fuel pump in all of them. While it wasnt a very loud humming sound I could still hear them. When setting in your car and turning the ignition key you should hear it just before the car starts to turn over as the pump starts up.

This is true. It probably wouldn't bother me if I knew it was a normal sound. Thing is, on one of my previous cars, a 95 century, the noise started where as it had previously been silent. Got louder and louder till the pump failed. So while the noise doesn't have to mean the pump is failing, it's probably something to keep an eye on.
