Tranny removal problem

Does anybody have a tip on getting the last bolt on the top connecting the tranny to the motor on the ka. I have tried universals, all wrenches, and coming from the top and the bottom with no luck as of yet. Thanks guys.

Re: Tranny removal problem

^^^^ what he said... a bunch of extentions and a swivel. Unbolt the tranny mount and use a jack to adjust up and down for the best angle...

Well after about 16-18 hours, I have a new clutch. That was a bitch and a half. The transmission has to be taken out and put back in like stair steps because of the firewall. Plus the sleeve that the throwout bearing was on was a bitch to get back on. Then the transmission would get within an inch of being on and stop. I finally got everything back together. Now I have got to be a good boy and drive easy on it for like 400 miles. This sucks. In all reality, I think this job is better left to the shops, unless you have the proper car and transmission supports at your house. I did everything on wood blocks and a floor jack. But hey it's done.

Congrats! Now you know how to do it, when your buddy's cluch goes.. lol
But ya, the proper lift/tranny jack make all the difference. We did my friend's car in his garage with jack stands, on our backs, using brute force. It took forever and sucked. Then when I needed to do mine, I took it to the Auto Hobby Shop on base. Using a car lift to be able to walk under the car made it so easy! I was wondering why it took us so long the first time LOL

SR20DETpower: when I said take off the tranny mount, that's what I was refering too. The "crossmember" is what the engine/steering rack bolts to. There's no reason to loosen that, unless you really want to. Either way, he understood what we were talking about and got the clutch in..

Re: Tranny removal problem

Plus the manual transmission isn't too heavy with fluid drained. Its light enough to where you can throw it aroudn some. Unlike some of those bigger autos(powerglides, TH350, 700R4s ect). I've had to help my dad pull his powerglide out of his race car a few times. Its gay.

Re: Tranny removal problem

OH, and you can loosen the engine crossmember some to lower the engine some. That will make install/removal a lot easier scenes how firewall clearance isn't so great.

I figured the input shaft wasn't going into the pilot bearing, but I moved the tranny around so much and had no luck getting it in. Since I had spent all day working on the car (13 hrs), and it was 10:30pm, so I decided to call it quits for the day. My dad helped me the next morning and his experience with cars shone bright. We ended up pulling the tranny back off, and smashing my finger in the process, and lubed the end of the input shaft and the pilot bearing. The we got a floor jack and put a short piece of 2 by 4 vertical on it, and placed it under a pulley on the front of the motor. We were able to jack up the front of the motor and angle it just enough to give us a easier time getting the tranny back on. Thank God my dad worked on cars his whole life. Just to be cool I want to tell you guys what my dad did. In his 20's he had a 1968 Corvette. The only mods were side exit headers, that came out his custom fenders and went to the side pipes, a prototype ignition system from his friend at Chevy, Koni shocks, and wide ass street radials. His Corvette had the M22 tranny (Muncie 4 speed), and the standard 350ci motor for the Vette of that year. His best 1/4 mile time was 11.87, and he never lost a race. He would dust big blocks all day long while they burned out on the line. Yay dad.

Re: Tranny removal problem

I believe its an iron case. He used a stock case from back in the day and just had the insides built by a friend of his who specializes in building powerglides. Trust me, it is pretty damn heavy. Luckily, we have an adapter for the floor jack if it ever has to come out again.lol
