Ignition timing for computer controle vehicles

I have a 98 Dodge pickup 303000 miles I just replaced the engine. The initial timing was set up on the distributor, the engine fired up fine and runs OK but not to its potential. It is a 5.9 that now has 202 valves and a 515/290 cam. It makes decent power above 3000 rpm's. My problem is not knowing how to bypass the computer so that I might dial the timing in to the new cam and valve set up. Any response will be appreciated, I can be contacted at [email protected]

if it's distributed then that's what dials in ignition timing. If you want to go computer controlled then i'd imagine you'd probably have to get something likd an MSD ignition.

The only way i know of to advance/retard timing with a distributor so to use a timing gun and move the actually unit a slight bit.

Unless i'm wrong, which I may be...all my cars have been factory with a DIS. (Distributorless Ignition System)

You are right about the distributor being the adjustment. However on some distributor ignitions the pcm actually controls upto 40 degrees of timing. Since I just set this one on static i need to disable the pcm timing to get the initial timing for the new engine requirements.
