Bypassing "smart deck". Tried it, but no luck - help please! :)

EDIT:

I tried pressing the AUX/tape button with the radio off. The tape icon flashed a few times, then I inserted the tape that runs t the ipod, and after a few seconds, the tape ejects itself.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!!!!

jose

Hello! Newbie here! Nice to see such a huge community on Lumina’s!!! I own a 96 Lumina

Well, I hope you guys can help. I’m kinda desperate now!

My main concern is: since there’s an AUX button on the radio, can I connect a 3.5mm to it in order to use my iPod?

I recently bought an iPod. As far as I know, there are 3 ways to use it on your car radio:

1. Wriless FM Transmitter
2. Via tape deck
3. Using auxiliary on your radi (connecting via 3.5mm???)

I tried FM wireless transmitter...not that good. I then went and bought one of those tapes that have a cable and runs to the ipod, in order to hear it via the car radio, but the lumina tape deck apparently has a sensor that can tell when the tape has no “tape” in it, so it ejects it after a few seconds, so...

I read that I can connect the iPod via the car stereo AUX input, using a 3.5mm cable. Can I do such thing on a 96’ Lumina radio? If posible, where can I find that AUX input, and can a 3.5mm can be used? My radio does not have CD, only tape. Or, if it doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack, or has a pin connector, is there any pin to 3.5mm “thingie”? (Sorry for my lack of knowledge regarding these matters!!!

The article can be read here, at HP.com: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...00290770&lc=en

Thanks a lot for your help!!!!

Jose

Re: Connecting a 3.5mm connector via AUX on car stereo (96’ Lumina). Is it possible?

The Delco radios do have a 'smart tape' deck. To bypass, hold the Tape button down with the radio off (car on) until the Dolby logo flashes (iirc). Then you can use the tape adapter.

As far as using the AUX input, I myself am looking into it extensively. I think you could theoretically use the inputs, but since the AUX is for a CD deck or CD changer, I'm not sure how the radio would react, if at all, to an input being given on the sound-only channels (as opposed to sound and CD control). The Auxillary connector is on the back of the radio, a propriety connecter and cable are used. Best bet is just using the tape deck.

I had no idea I could bypass the "smart tape"! That's a great idea! Thanks for your help!!! I'll definately try that!

Do I have to bypass it everytime I turn on the car?

Thanks!

I don't; I keep an old Powerbook 3400c in my passenger seat to play music. I can swap between the radio and the tape okay, but if I change tapes (say to listen to some other tape) I need to do it before going back to the adapter.

I tried bypassing it, but it didn't work

With the radio off, I pressed the tape/aux button, and the tape icon flashed a few times. I then inserted the tape, but after a few seconds, maybe more, the tape ejected itself

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Get a different adapter

jt, try purchasing a different brand of tape adapter. I once bought a Sony adapter at K-Mart that ejected every time also. I returned it and bought an RCA that works. I think the radio might just have trouble with the design of certain brands. Good luck!
