Need Security Help!

I'm looking at getting alarm, keyless, and remote start. I have no idea what to go with so if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. here's a list of what is available in my area. by the way i'm gonna pay for the install cuz i don't wanna mess stuff up.

Audiovox- $450 installed
Viper- $470 installed
Crime Stopper- $370 installed
Clifford- $550 installed
TRC- $550 installed

If you know of any others that are just as good as what i'm lookin at but cheaper please let me know. cuz i can get pretty much anything installed for $150-$200. I want as top of the line as I can get but I love to save money too.

Re: Need Security Help!

I say go with the Viper (I have the Viper 791). It has remote start and a whole bunch of other features that can be added. Both Viper and Clifford are made by the same company (DE I believe) so they're essentially the same alarm. I like the look of the Viper (metallic blue) but the Clifford has a carbon fiber look to it so if that's what you like then that'll be cool too. Good luck.

Re: Need Security Help!

i have a clifford alarm system. very very happy with it. just have remote keyless entry, but there's room for other options. i like the fact that i can turn down the sensitivity of the alarm system. it has a warning beep when it gets knocked before the alarm actually goes off.

so remote start? why not save 300 bucks and forget that crap. just go with the keyless entry, and maybe a trunk/hatch opener. remote start sounds like a waste of money, unless you just have money to piss away. however, forgive my rant, but IF perhaps you live in the the northern cold states, then maybe the remote start would be worth it on very cold winter mornings.

but just think what else you could get with the 300 you'd save....

Re: Need Security Help!

I just finished installing the viper alarm on my car, and between it and the hayes shop manual, I almost junked my car 4 times. The damn thing took me a week to do. Plus, if the alarm system's engaged I can still even start the car... what kinda bullshit is that? I hate my 791 XV and I say go clifford, because anything is better than this. It's not worth the money I wasted on it. Sorry Slade, but I'm gonna' disagree with ya on this one... my alarms' been givin' me nothing but problems. I'll shake the car and nothing'll hapen and I know I installed it right. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

yup, i live in Texas too. and my bro has leather seats in his Explorer. and yes, i've sat on leather after 100+ degree days. not fun, but still, the A/C won't do much to cool the leather down. that's the bad part of leather, its really hot in the summer and really cold in the winter. but very very comfortable.

That sucks bro...I know how you feel. When I was doing my system, I had a whole bunch of problems with it too. It took me a LONG time to figure out all the little bugs that was going on. YUCK!
As far as you shaking the car and nothing happening goes, two things come to mind. There's a "sensor thingy" where you could change the sensitivity. If you make it more sensitive then it'll go off quicker. My alarm goes off if someone drives by with too loud of an exhaust/music. The second thing that I could think of is the computer going bad. I think StealthMod was saying something about his brain messing up and the shop eventually had to replace it or something. But yeah, hopefully you could find out what's wrong with it....

Law_3KGT, if you're not gonna do the remote start then yeah, I think you should just get a standard alarm. I heard something about one of the Viper series with all the features of the 791 minus the remote start. So yeah, that'll be a cheaper alternative and you'll still get everything else. If I knew about that beforehand I would probably have gone that route instead. Good luck.

Re: Need Security Help!

Well, I take back what I said. I finally fixed out all the bugs, but it took me 8 days to install it. If you get a viper 791, just make sure you know of a reputable place to do it.

The only thing that really got me through was that I talked to a tech and he gave me advice on putting everything together. He said that CLIFFORD makes the best alarms, and that he would in the future, advise me to get one. Good luck!

Re: Need Security Help!

I mean, you can get an alarm with remote start, however you have to make sure that when you use it your car isn't in gear. That's the whole point as to why you "can't" do it with a manual tranny. I didn't connect it myself, because I don't want to take a chance that I accidentally left my car in gear when I hit the remote start button... if that happens it'll either kill the car or the car will (if you don't have your parking break on) take off like a rocket. My dad's installed alarms in the past and he's had it happen to him...

He was working on a 60's ford galaxy 500 with a remote start system, and he was sitting in the front seat with the remote start system on. He was taking off the under dash to get to the wires, when all the sudden out of the corner of his eye, he saw the gear shifter move from park to reverse. He immideatly slammed the break, but the car still lurched a little. That was on an auto tranny.

My advice is just to get a clifford alarm, and if you think that you're responsible enough with a remote start, than have it hooked up, but if not, than don't hook it up. If the mechanic tells you it can't be done, kick him in the balls and walk away.

LOL Yeah, it could be done and I believe there's even a safety feature where if your car is in gear and you try to start your car with the remote start feature it won't start.
