Unhappy 22r-e timing chain problem

Well, I have a '90 pickup with the 22r-e in it. I bought a timing chain set and put everything on exactly the way they're supposed to be where all the marks are lined up and what not. Crankshaft is at 0 with the top sprocket pointing at the 12 o clock position with distributor dial pointing at spark wire #1 on the cap. I even had 3 mechanics that I know come over and help me do it. But the only problem now is that it won't turn over. Now I'm stuck with nothing. I love this little truck and I really would like to keep it and not have to junk it. Help anyone?

Re: 22r-e timing chain problem

What do you mean by it won't turnover? Does the motor spin? Did you try turning the motor by hand? Did you adjust the valves?

The motor spins...belts, everything. It sounds as if it WANTS to start when you turn the ignition, but it just won't start. Anyone have a clue?

Fuel, spark, air are the things you need. Do you have them?

Re: 22r-e timing chain problem

Hey I did my 22RE Timing Chain Last Summer.... I (after some consultation with a pro) assembled it together I had a problem getting those dimples lined up and didnt lime them up - I just ensured the crankshaft and camshaft didnt move....

Anyway after I Put it together (ready to start up) - I turned the engine over slowly to ensure no interference between the valves and the pistons occured---- Then I started it up

For it to run you need (from about.com)

1. Spark
2. Proper Air Fuel Mixture
3. Compression (I think this would include cam crank timing)

Re: 22r-e timing chain problem

PS Pull out your chilton manual to the diagnostics place.... And oh yeah retrace ur steps --- I think alot of the igintion coil to distributor wiring is disconnected during this timing chain chore ---

Re: 22r-e timing chain problem

Thanks guys for the help. I'm gonna wait until next week or else put the yota to rest by the side of the garage for winter.

I just got through putting my new timing chain and guides in my truck, same year.

When or if you removed the head make sure your fuel injectors are attached and can easily turn. I also installed a new fuel filter while I was at it.

When I started the truck it turned over like a mofo... so... I went to my shelf and pulled down my can of Easy Start, shot a few bursts directly into the intake manifold...It took one hit, started and purred like a kitten.
