Loud humming sound from fuel pump or gas filter

My son has a 96 sunfire with over 200k on it.
The problem he has is it runs fine for a while but has this loud humming sound coming from either the Fuel pump or Fuel filter, after a while this sound changes and the car stalls, and then the real problems begin and we can not seem to keep it running. I also notice when we open the gas tank it sucks in a huge amount of air. any insight would be appreciated

check your fuel lines. You can buy a fuel line pressure gauge and check that yourself. Make sure your filter and pump along with gaskets are clean and securely mounted. Also, make sure you are not leaking gas.

Re: Loud humming sound from fuel pump or gas filter

it's gonna be the fuel pump most likely, regular fuel filter changes will help prevent the pump from burning up again. that's what it sounds like to me anyways.
