96 not charging

My 96 cherokee wont stay charged up i have put a new altonator on it and battery had both bench tested and they are both good. I put a fully charged battery on it it runs fine for a while but my altonator isent charging i take the battery cables off and it dies, any ideas on if i have a short where it could be.

o yea what are the biggest size tire i can run on my jeep without a lift

Get a cheep digital volt meter or have someone check the voltage at the battery when the engine is running. You should have 13.8-14.5 volts then. If it is lower then there is an alternator or regulator problem.

The battery cables shouldn't be disconnected while the engine is running. That can damage the alternator or computers on some vehicles.

If the car has a key off drain on the battery from a circuit not turning off and you do mostly short trips, the alternator may not maintain the battery charge level even if it is good. Check for lights that stay on like the glovebox or console first. If those aren't the problem, then you need a mechanic or more instructions to check it your self.


You could probably stuff 35 inchers under there if you just go straight ahead but to be able to turn without rubbing not much bigger than a 30-9.5z15 will work or a 235/75 15. Mine had 31x10.5-15's when i first got it. They rubbed at full lock turns and I didn't want to adjust the turn stops so I had them replaced with the 235/75-15's.

Thankz i got it together now i think had a wire shorted out from some recent engine mods,

So you had 31's on there thats what i have been considering you think i could do some wheel well modification and get ride of the rubbing

The 31's never bothered the wheel wells but mine has the 1-2" upcountry factory lift. It was the inside of the tire that rubbed on the sway bar when the wheels were turned.

That can be adjusted out by turning the wheel stop bolts but you loose turning radius. Plus the 31's that were on it rode like you were sitting on balloons and that didn't pass the "business managers" approval either.

Another guy I know has an identical Jeep to mine. He put a 3 in lift on it in addition to the upcountry lift that it came with. He ran 31's on stock rims and still had the rubbing on turns. He also took out the front diff and "slip yoke" several times too.

I think if you went with 8" rims with different back set to push the tires out more you would be ok...

I recently bought the stock rim-tire combination from a brand new 05' Wrangler Unlimited. Tire size is 30-9.5-R15's with an 8" rim . Slightly offset, but the tires still tuck up under enough to keep debris from trashing my paint. No rubbing problems at full lock or full travel. (Plus they fill up the stock wheel well nicely! )
