1991 Trooper reverse gear problem

Hi there:

Could someone be kind enough to help me with the following question?

Everytime or most of the time when I try to put the trooper in reverse, it tends to refuse to enter reverse gear. So what I do is to put it into any other gear and then try the reverse. This usually works. What could be the problem that it doesn't shift smoothly?

Thanks for your help!
