Unhappy buying rx-7 please help

hello i'm new here and i am about to buy a rx-7
for a very cheap price (1200) its a 91 and it needs a few things done to it but my main concern is the engine. the lady put another engine in the car after having the other one for 68,000 miles. The "new" engine was out of a car that was in an accident and had about 30,000 on it now has about 50,000 on the new engine. When i started the car up, the idle was very low and i drove it around for a while (this car is unfortunately auto) the throttle response is very slow and it seems like it comes alive and really goes when it wants to. it failed inspection for emissions and theres no exhaust leak that i know of. could someone please help me? any ideas? i would really appreciate it. thank you very much

Re: buying rx-7 please help

need more detains but from the sounds of it i woudl walk away.

Emmissions coudl be any number of things, something as simple as a vacuem line thats cracked, or possibly a clogged cat, improperly running air pump. ect ect.

i'd leave it just cuz of the automatic. ask anyone who's ever owned a rotary and they'll tell ya that thing doesnt come alive until the tach is at about 4000 rpm

yeah i hated the fact it was auto but i did get it to redline when i test drove it. i called around a bit and the one guy said it sounds like a rebuild cuz in the 90 + models they have plastic teeth instead of metal and they wear out sooner. I wasn't 100% sure of wat he was talkin about but he sounded like he knew a lil about them. he said a 90+ 7 needs a rebuild every 50k miles. thanks for your replies and your help. i really want a 7 but they're hard to come by with my income and my area.

Re: buying rx-7 please help

buddie is an idiot who told you any of that information. 50k miles and it needs a rebuild. Tell him to head back to school and learn somethng about what hes giving advice on.

I cant remember for the life of me what he says have plastic teeth VS metal ones on the S4. ??? Im stumped, but mabe he can elaborate a bit on that.

By all means pick up the car if you enjoy it, but do realise that it may need some work to get it able to be street legal and pass emissions testing.

ok thank you for clearing that up...that would suk if u really had to rebuild every 50k. but anyways...the interior is in good shape the exterior has chipped paint and a pretty big dent on the passenger side door. the car comes with a $600 sound system but they said they won't lower the price($1200) with it out. its either this car or a nx2000 (5spd) with 90k on the engine(sr20de) for $2000
