he's welcome to ride any bike he likes. but bikes with less than 80HP lets you learn better, and newer 600 ccs are liability to ride since they're very unforgiving to mistakes. that gixxer has more than 100 HP and about as light as GS500F. with high-revving bikes, they need to be revved more to get power, so high speed and learning don't do so well. and I'm sure you're already aware that rider needs to be extra smooth to get best handling out of it. you could pick up a SV, and it would feel like a scooter in comparison to gixxer.

Re: questions on a noob bike?

yea hes used to riding Yamaha Banshies and Raptors but im like thats not the same as a motorcyle that has only two wheels and uses your body to stear the bike not a handle and your weight to turn it hes tryed my 03 750 and was fine shifting it at the right rmps and shit it was the fact of his takes offs they sucked because hes used to not having to using the hole method of moving your rist but other than that he was fine hes take offs were kinds rough but hes noobish so was i at one time but he will get better eventualy

there's more to riding than shifting and keeping the bike rolling.

it's his call, but as a friend, I would highly suggest you to push the idea of starting small and kepping it at least for 2 seasons before upgrading. 1 year goes by fast if he's riding properly and having fun.

Well I'm sure he hasn't taken your gsxr up in the revs which is a good thing. Honestly, starting on a new 600 isn't going to be all that bad as long as he stays off the high end revs (as everyone here will tell you). My first bike is an older 600 (93 CBR), and it is actually quite controllable under 8k, however; once you pass 8k, your talking about an entirely different bike. Its like going from high school ball straight to the pros in a matter of seconds. I think (since you know him personnaly) you should evaluate what kind of a person (as far as driving) that he is, and make your decision on whether he will be responsible enough on a 600 as a first bike. Realize that new 600s put out a LOT of power, but its all up top. I honestly like Zs suggestions as a first bike (especially the SV650). Their powerband is more linear.

good advice. and I want to clarify that I'm not suggesting 600s because they're fast for newbies, in fact I agree that keeping the tach below 9k, the bike is like Ninja 500. but after a week or so, you start developing false confidence, and eventually, the back of your brain will advise to roll it on some more. and that's when stuff happens as powers of high-revving bikes are revealed. if you don't have the skill or experience to control the excess power, it's easy to make mistakes.

also the race reps are fitted with killer brakes, 1 finger is all that necessary to catapult the bike into a stoppie. and although they handle great (best among 4 cylinders), they're not downright easiest to flick on hairpins like SVs, Ninja 250/500, etc, again race reps require smoother control and extra planning since they're meant for high speed turns. weight and how the power is delivered makes all the difference.

Re: questions on a noob bike?

SV650 is the way to go in my opinion. Any modern superbike in the hands of a new rider is a recipie for disaster. hell, most of the people that own them probably have no business whatsoever on them.

An SV650 is still plenty of motorcycle, and its very likely he will never be able to outride what the bike is capable of, especially with a few minor modifications. Its also a MUCH better motorcycle in every riding scenario aside from aggressive sport riding than a gixxer is. If I didnt do frequent track days, I wouldnt own my R6. Id likely own a lightweight twin like an SV. Theyre excellent all around motorcycles.

Re: questions on a noob bike?

my current bike is also my first. so far all is well. it's not a big deal if he's willing to take it easy for the first 1000 miles or so and actually get a feel for riding. if he's like my "friend" though, who was hitting 100+mph his first day out on his first bike, he's gonna have problems just like my "friend" did, who's on accident #5 since he got the bike 3 months ago. it's all about the person. and take msf, it's worth every penny.

how many times have the regulars and the knowledgable advised a newbie to get a SV or an older 600?

shitloads!!!

to be honest your "friend" go and get on any bike he likes but its up to him to be responsible and aware of the consequences of his actions.

i have a friend who has a 954 that rides daily and doesn't go over 4000rpm or 80km/hr (50mph)

your friend must be aware that, unlike cars, when you fuck up its your life and your loved ones lives your also going to fuck up along with any innocent people that happen to be in the wrong place.
you started on a gixer 750 so why can't he?

i ride sports bike because its the bike i want to ride and its an extension of my personality. personally (don't take this personally Z) i wouldn't ride the SV because its not my type of bike. don't buy something your not going to be happy to be seen on just for the sake of learning. you won't get the full enjoyment.

(disclaimer: this post does not mean that i encourage anyone to go and get on a bike that is not suited to them or that will cause them or any other persons harm or possible death)

Re: questions on a noob bike?

2 probs with SV for newbs: clutch needs good feathering in 1st gear, because the bike will just start pulling without throttle. and its engine braking is a bitch, it has much, much more than CBR.

so fairyblade is an extension of your persona? . I guess fairyblades don't go over 4000 rpm. Very boring. Aussie, borrow a SV and try it, you'll swear it handles like a scooter, whether you like the power or not, whether you hate the bike, but it's that damn easy to ride the bike anywhere. whenever I'm feeling like a runt, I take the CBR out. and for the last time, SV is a sportbike, just not a race rep.

after riding the SV, I feel like I can pick up a R1 right now and ride it conservatively with no problem. and how long have I been riding?? when I started, I was hopeless.
