How to take the starter out?

I have a 96 Corolla and recently it hesitates to start. Can anyone share an idea how to take it out? I heard the repair is pretty simple. But it seems very difficult to take the starter out. A mechanic told me he would charge two hours of labor for that since the starter is behind the engine.

Did work above or under the car? I can hardly see it from above. Do you need any special tools? Thanks.

Re: How to take the starter out?

you do it from above, but you have to lean on the engine,( btw the engine being cold helps ALOT) and you need a ratchet with 13 mm, 12mm, 10mm, an d maybe 14 or 17 i dunno. and some other maybe smaller in order to remove the bolt that holds the cable on the starter.

it looks harder than it really is man don't worry, but you weill be blind when you do it.. you won't be able to see much.. you have to rely on your sens of touch. the first time is the tougher

hope this helps

Is the starter on the front side on the 96 or on the firewall side?

Re: How to take the starter out?

deadring,

Which year is your Corolla? I just took a look at the starter. I feel even I can somehow unscrew it, there is not enough space to take it out from above.

Re: How to take the starter out?

mines an 89, but my last one was a 91 with EFI and the only way to take it out was, after all the cables where off it, to yank it out... turn it on itself a couple times till you find a "right" way to pull it up.

well first of all this is gonna take about an hour of your time, just unhook every cable off it( AFTER you unplug the battery of course) and unscrew it.. you'll see what i mean,

like i said before, it looks harder than it really is.. i too, had hesitation in doing it.

Good luck

Re: How to take the starter out?

No sir. On my 91 you do have to disconnect a lot of stuff. But you stand over the top of the car facing the windshild and take the screws out. Then you can tilt it out from the passenger side near the power sterring pump.

Re: How to take the starter out?

Sounds like the ABS motor is bad. That is the only thing I know that whines until you disconnect the battery. Check out this site - http://www.modulemaster.com/
