Screeching noise when fuel tank runs low?

Hello All, I have a 97 c1500 Suburban, (gas), when my fuel gauge gets down towards empty I get this high pitched noise from the rear of the truck, I tought it was my rear brakes at first but then noticed that it didn't stop after I put the truck in park, it goes away after I fill up, or even after about 8 gallons of fuel. Could this be a fuel pump going out? Any help, as always is very appreciated, Thanks.

The fuel pump not only pumps fuel to the engine it uses the gas to cool and lube the pump. If the pump is making a loud noise when the tank is low then you are going to loose that pump soon.
NEVER run a in tank fuel pump under a 1/4 tank of gas in a truck with a big fuel tank

does a pump that is block mounted use fuel for lubrication also or does it utilize engine oil for its lubrication needs?

a block mounted fuel pump does use engine oil to lube the pump push rod ,thats the part that goes from the cam to the fuel pump rocker arm, gas is not used as a lube or coolant like it is in a in tank pump

If you ever have to do that again use a big glob of greese to hold the push rod up ,, it works

I recall on a 327 Chevy small block there was a hole you could put a long bolt into in front of the fuel pump that would hold the rod in place while you installed the pump. You would screw it by hand just enough to contact the rod.
I wonder if it iis still there?
