The PCM or Computer might be bad it will burn out a coil. Also check for any breaks in the wirring.

Re: coil problem

CAM is right. I forgot all about my own experience with a bad plug wire, I burnt up 3 ignition coils because one of my SPARK PLUG WIRES were bad causing the wire to arc and overheating my ignition coil.

Also check inside the boots of the plug wire for any carbon tracking, this will also cause arcing and will lead to premature failure of the ignition coil.

Re: coil problem

I’ve been reading your forms on Jeeps.

I’ve been having the coil problem my self. My first coil went out after owning the Jeep for a couple of years, late last winter. So I put in a new Napa coil. Then in early June I gave it a tune up including new wires. On Father’s Day weekend, while pulling my camper when it was hotter then hell, the coil went out again. (Being Sunday with no parts stores open and no tools handy, it made for a hell of a tow bill.) I chalked it up to a defective coil, which Napa replaced. Then it went out AGAIN when pulling a trailer on a hot day in August. I guessed a bad product line, and got my money back. I then bought a MSD coil. Now it’s also starting to show symptoms like it’s about to go out.

I’ve heard the bad plug wire theory before. I haven’t had a chance to test mine, but I had one coil go out on the last set of wires, and two, (so far) go out on the current set. Any other ideas?

Another problem I’ve had since I’ve owned the Jeep, and so did the last owner, is the information center. This is more of an annoyance then any thing, but, since I’ve owned it, the display on the information center has read “rear lamp failure”. Also, the left turn signal blinks like it has a bulb out. The bulbs have been checked and then replaced. The panels on the truck have been pulled out to check for a bad wire or a bad ground. Adding an extra ground was even tried with no result. Any ideas hear would be good too.

And last, the security system. When I bought the jeep, there was no “door chime” and the power locks would only unlock, not lock. The box that the door chime came from had been removed. I picked one up from a scrap yard, and found out why it had been removed. It kept making noise every minute or so when the “rear lamp failure” flashed on the info center. I removed the diaphragm from the box so the noise couldn’t be heard.

Something I also noticed after reinstalling this box was the power lock button would all sudden now lock the doors, when they wouldn’t before putting this box back in. Then I found the other reason the box was removed. When installed, it allowed the security system to go off for no reason, usually at an annoying time. Such as in a parking lot, or in front of my house at 3:am.

Any help I can get on any of these problems, especially the coil, would be helpful.

Re: coil problem

On the lamp failure: check the 4 bulbs on the 3rd brake light at the top of the rear window. Check all of your rear bulbs to be sure they are the right ones. I've seen the wrong bulbs installed cause this problem. Finally check all of the sockets to be sure they're not corroded. The computer expects the current draw of the circuit to be in a specific range. If it is not you'll get the rear lamp failure message. SJ
