Cutting the springs to drop the car??

What do yall think about actually cutting the springs? I understand that for performance cars you want performance springs but I'm just trying to make a lowrider hatchback...you know, where the rims and tires stick out about 3". I researched a lot of lowrider articles and how to's and I found a few lowrider kats just cut the springs to the desired heights. But I want sum info on the negatives of doing this. I know that they have to be cut by hand and not with a torch cuz this could alter the metal's crystalline makeup (and possibly make it too ductile, depending on the cooling rate) not to mention shrink the coil somewhat. Any other input?

NEGATIVES? How about a ride so bouncy you throw up every 10 miles... never cut the springs on ANY ride, less you happen to be doing up like an old impala with hydros, then at least its semi acceptable.

Isn't the ride bouncy anyway if I put lower springs? I'm assuming that I should just change the whole shock rather than just the springs. I've changed shocks before but not lowered. Any recommendations on good brands that won't cost me my nads? Since I'm not making a racer, just a low, do you think that I'll have to use different types of shocks than the racers? I mean after all, racers use parts meant for the sport.

are you puttin daytons on it.lol:hehehe: and no the ride isnt bumpier if you put springs on it. they are supposed to make the suspension better. but if you get the wrong springs then the ride will be shitty.

Not really -- see the "lowness" you want causes unusual shock pressure... so just getting "normal" shocks wont help much. I had a set of coilovers and I slammed my car -- I think we made it like 2 miles and we already started to blow a shock (stock shocks on a 93 -- so they were getting old anyways)

Set of Koni Yellows will run like $550 -- however I hear Monroe Sensitrac's will work as well -- should be under like $250. Send a PM to member "Praxis" on these forums and tell him you want a set and that I sent yah -- he will be able to give you the exact price and more info!

and yeah, the ride doesnt get worse with just springs. Before the shocks blew, for the good 2 miles till I started to blow em -- I was in heaven. Thing handled incredibly with absolutely no bounce -- and even LESS bounce then stock!

Trust me sparq, it looks tight. I used to have one before (got stolen) and it got tha girls' numbers, nahmean. It just has to have the right paint job, rims, and tires. Not just any lame shit will do. But then again, I'm part of the ol' school, none of that new racer stuff (although it looks tight). Besides, I'm not an American car lover...except for the old Impala of course.

Hmmm...I guess you could make a vacation of it. I mean I do live in New Orleans. It would just be a long trip but I've done it before....to Philly at least. How much would you let it go for?
