tempermental trunk

Hey
The trunk of our 2001 golf works when it wants to- which is rarely, and just makes the sound as if it were working the rest of the time (that is, you can hear that the switch is working, that the latch is trying, but it just won't open). The only way to open it is with the main key itself (the button on the remote only works occassionally) as the mechanics key doesn't open the trunk- which is frustrating since that's the key that i use the most....has anyone else ran into this? or have any ideas as to why it will work one minute and not the next?!

I Had the same problem on my Polo and it ended up being the rod that comes from the solenoid that was bent and not pushing the lock far enough maybe your problem is the same. I simply straightend the rod and it still works like a charm

Hope it helps

The rod he's talking about is a metal rod with plastic ball ends. Seems familiar to older vw's with clutch/ shift linkage problems where the plastic cup side breaks and neither work. That might have happened with you, or the latch may have broke (common failure) easy way to tell is to remove the rear trunk pannel. there should be alot of philips screws and some clips holdint it on( usually where the handle area you grab to close it)
