I just bought an 86 fiero gt and I was wondering if anyone can tell me what work I can do on the engine to get more hp out of it before I start puttin engine mods on it?

easy: turbo.
less than easy: V8 conversion.
least expensive: drive it, enjoy it, and research it, while doing your engine mods; one paycheck at a time.

and welcome to the forums.
there are MANY websites out there for the Fiero.
and the 2.8L has many performance parts you can buy for it.
headers, coil packs, and cams, plus more...
JET performance makes a decent chip for the ECM; they also have under-drive pulleys as well.

if you do decide to cam it, while you have the engine out, or lowered, might put into the budget, the alt., water pump, and timing gears, as well as a new serp belt. (as it would be ashame to put it all back in, then three months later, you're on your back, knuckles busted in the drive, changing something that was just right in front of you).

good luck in whichever route you go.

if turbo is an option:

check out
squires turbo systems
on the web, as they have a uniqueeasy bolt-up, and also

IRM Fiero
makes a turbo kit, and I can get you a part number and ph# if you want.

the small block chevy is the most common.
