'88 civic HB fuelpump

I have a 1988 civic hatchback and it wont start all the time. When I turn the key over I have to listen for the fuelpump to come one and go off and then I can start it and it will start everytime. If the fuelpump doesn't come on at all then the car wont start. Is the fuelpump suppose to do that? Could it be the wrong fuelpump? The pump is only about 4-5 months old so could it be bad. What's the deal..if anyone can tell me some info or help me out let me know...thanks

Re: '88 civic HB fuelpump

Sounds like it might be your Main Relay, which controls your pump. Or it could be a bad connection at the pump. I tested my relay and it worked but the pump wouldn't so i unhooked eveything to drop the tank and hooked it back up to see how much fuel was in the tank and it's worked ever since..... bad connection somewhere.
