1995 2.3L engine swap

ive got a little bit of money to burn from good old uncle sam and im in love with my 1995 grand am se (first car). Ive already put a lot of time and money into it as it is over the past 3 years but im afraid that with 170,000 miles it doesnt have much life left in the engine (2.3L Quad 4). Ive heard that the 3100 V6 is a good candidate for a swap but im not sure if i want to go with a V6. Ive recently considered the supercharged 2.0L ecotec 4 cylinder. Does anybody know if its even possible to swap this engine? I have 2 uncles who build racecars so finding/paying someone to do it is not a problem. Ive already consulted with them and they dont seem to think that it will much of a problem but they are used to gutting a car and dropping a 350HP engine into it...an aweful lot of cutting involved in their work haha. Does anybody think/know if this is possible without completely destroying the car?

Re: 1995 2.3L engine swap

you can swap just about anything for anything... what I mean is any of the Quad 4s should work fine. If you go for the V6 you'll have to change the computer, the tranny, and maybe some other stuff. It will cost a bit to do the V6 swap. I personaly dont like the Quad 4s but you can by some nice hop-ups for them. You might be better off just rebuilding the engine you have, that is if you haven't had troubles w/2.3.

Most of the 3.1, 3.3, 3.4s are fairly decent motors. I'm a V8 man livin in a V6 world

I got 230k out of my quad before I had to do internal work ie head and head gasket were shot. The biggest question is this: Are you willing to put alot of money and time into a 10 year old car? Personally, I'd rebuild the quad since changing to a different motor means changing motor, transmission, engine harness, dash harness, computer, alternator, ac compressor, powersteering pump, instrument cluster, radiator etc. And there are probably a few things I missed too.

Re: 1995 2.3L engine swap

i dont have a problem with the 2.3L. In fact it runs like a champ but the only thing i dont like is that i cant find any performance upgrades for it. It seems like everything i find is either for a 2.2 or a 2.4. Ive put a lot of money in the body, interior, tires, etc but nothing to the engine. Am i just not looking in the right places?

They make full length headers for the 2.3 quad4 motors, and they do make a difference. I got one, it bolted right on to the motor and to the stock pipe, ran it like that for a week until I could get to my buddy's house and use his pipe bender to do a custom exhaust. It did make a difference. If you have a dohc motor search around for a pair of w-41 cams. You can also port and polish the heads and install a cai, all of which I have done and its given me a nice performace gain. There are also different rods and pistons that can be done, turbo or supercharger with a little fabrication work.

Re: 1995 2.3L engine swap

alright thanks for the info. I stumbled across something called a "Turbonator"..its a stationary vortex that goes in your intake hose between the throttle body and the air filter. It supposedly adds 35HP to any vehicle. Anybody know anything about this? Sounds too good to be true to me...
