suspension bushings

i have a 73 c-10 that im restoring and now im at the point where the frame is all degreased and all i have to do is replace the bad stuff and then spray undercoating on it. well i noticed the bushings for the control arms on the front suspension are all cracked and pretty much shot. i went out and bought all 8 replacement bushings and now here is my question... how should i go about the process of replacing them? can i do it without borrowing a spring compressor and all that time consuming B.S.? i know for sure i will be using a gear puller to pull them old babies outta there, but will i need to compress the springs to get the new bushings in? im weawy confusedified...

You will need to drop the lower control arm to access the bushings. There are other ways to do it, but why fight it? Just borrow the right tools, it is easy with the the right stuff. The coil springs can put a serious hurt on you if it decides to popout side ways because you used a home made method of compressing the spring. I know from experience. I tried my own way (when I was a teenager and knew everything), I remember being struck in the head, then waking up later with blood in my mouth and a lump on my head the size of a grapefruit.

Re: suspension bushings

lol ouch. i decided that they really didnt look that bad after all, and even if they start to squeak a little down the road, i wont hear them over the lopey cam lol. some dude at autozone was telling me to get a machine shop to use a hydraulic gear puller or something to pull em out so i sed the heck with it and returned the bushings i bought. if they go bad later i guess ill just pay a crudload to get it done at a shop
