can u put a v8 in a 2001 Sunfire?
I'm trying to increase my cars hp and right now it only has a v6. I was wondering if I could put a v8 in it without anything going terribly wrong.

I don't know for sure, but I would suggest you research the frame of the car and see if you can find out what it's torque specifications are. Same goes with the transmission.

Wow...ok nvm what i just posted...i thought you had an old cavi Z24....
First off your Fire is only a 4 banger...just like all the other fires out there. You can fit a V6 in there...its been done but is extremely expensive and timeconsuming...most put in the GTP engine...But no you cannont fit a V8 in that engine bay without streching it and morphing the body...if you were to do that then make it a Mid-engine RWD platform

Re: can u put a v8 in a 2001 Sunfire?
a V6 BARELY fits in the bay, you have to actually cut the passenger side a little in the fender well to get the pulley's to fit. the tranny wont hold an immense amount of power, but if you dont plan on beating the car, it should hold up for a while. better bet would be a 4-banger with turbo, since for the $$$ you need to sink into the work to put a V6 in to the car is pretty big, a turbo 4 with the same $$$ put into it would net you more power and better fuel mileage, not to mention it would be easier to work on (the rear plugs on a V6 are hard to remove when you only have like 1/2 an inch to get to them LOL)

V8 in Sunfire
Actually... - research the Cadillac Northstar DOHC V8. It runs 4.0 to 4.6 cubic inches with 275 to 315 hp stock. It also has an available FWD Transaxle. Caddy originally used it in the Catera which was basically a Cav/Sun. They have used it in other FWD models as well. They are dropped into the originally 4/v6 powered rear transaxle Fiero's all the time and bolt up. I have found these engines new for as little as 2500 but expect to pay more. Used with low miles you can sometimes run across them for around 1k maybe even less. Check around. Of course you would want to re-enforce your chasis, suspension, and probably trans if you were going to do any racing. The suspension would be easy...as would the chasis if you can weld. The would be the biggest expense (if you didnt replace it with a caddy version). If you are familiar with engine swaps you may be able to "do it yourself" for 3-5k if you are a savy shopper...otherwise......buy a firebird...lol
As far as a mid-engine set up....well you would end up building a new car! RWD is a possibility. There are conversion kits to make Foci RWD and except Fords Modular V8's. Good Luck.... |

Re: can u put a v8 in a 2001 Sunfire?
a v-8 wont fit, even a northstar, the v6 BARELY fits, and the I4 has 1" of clearance. The Caddy is a bit wider than the j-body. the 3800 needs extensive work to fit and move down the road. if you want to move fast, just do what the fast (11.5 second and faster) j-body guys are doing to their cars. www.j-body.org

A V8? Dear god. I don't think it'd even come close to fitting.
