Upgrading BMW Phone

I have a 2000 BMW 740il and I recently stopped by my Verizon store. I wanted to change my plan and when they saw the phone that I had (the CPT7000) they told me that I would have to get a new phone in December no matter what. They said that a new law was passed saying that all cell phones must have a GPS chip by 2006 so that if you call 911 they will know where you are. I don't want to lose my built-in hands free because of this.
First, does anyone know if there is any truth to this claim that I have to get a new phone?
Second, if I do have to get a new phone, is there any way that I could get the bluetooth option installed in my BMW, and if so, about how much would it cost? Thanks.

Have you found anything out about this. I just bought a 2001 740il which was prewired and had the same phone and was told the whole systemwas useless

that's pretty cool. my phone has bluetooth compatibility which allows me to sync it with a tomtom 700, but I wonder if that would fulfill the requirement you speak of.

Re: Upgrading BMW Phone

I purchased my 2001 740IL without a phone and asked the dealer about options. They said the old hardware was "obsolete" but that a bluetooth option was expected soon. Check-in with your dealer to see what they say...I'd be interested to know if you get more details. Cheers.
