93' Chevy S-10 Blazer

I have a 93' Chevy S-10 Blazer that dies when it wants too. I can run it for 5 minutes or 55 minutes. When I slow down for a stop light is when it wants to cut out on me. I have replaced the fuel filter - fuel pump (whole assembly) - spark plugs, rotor & cap and various other items. The ONLY way I can get it to start back up is to carry a timing light around with me and when it dies, take the #1 spark plug wire off, put the timing light on the spark plug, turn the key in the ignition and it fires right up. This can happen anywhere from 1x - 5x a day give or take. Does ANYONE out there know what I should try to fix next? This is a little hectic especially when I am on the highway and I have to use one of the far lanes (cause of a traffic jam) and be ready to pull off in the emergency lane to restart it.

dave,

how many miles on her?
and 2.5/2.8/4.3?
auto or man?

when she cuts out, is it flutter and die, then idiot lights on the dash, or I mean like "boom" I'm gonna lock-up right here?

I guess, check the batt. alt. and cables for good contact first, and/or have the charging system checked at a parts store.
but it almost sounds like maybe a control module. GM HEI ignition control modules always seemed to do the intermittant thing before they tank on you.
how long has this been going on?

it doesn't feel like pulleys and belt are dragging it to stall, right?
maybe the ignition switch could be going, does it feel sloppy in your steering column? any other elec. dilemma prior or during?

start with batt. and charging system (more common, and free to check)
then work through others (control modules can last 45K or run for 145K)
but when they go, it can be sporadic or just gone. some guys even carry spares in their glove boxes.

hope this helps,
chris

Let me guess it runs great at higher rpms but runs like poop at idle. Do you have vortec 4.3? ot tbi?

If is a vortec it is more than likely the fuel injector.
-Take the cover off the top of the motor that is labled vortec.
-There is a big round sensor under it that is in the intake. Remove the sensor.
-If the intake smell like alot of gas, eithier the injector or the lines going to the injector are bad.
-If it smells like gas, remove the upper part or the intake. You will see the injector and the lines right in the middle.
-Turn the key to the run pos. but do not start it. Leave it in the run pos. and go look and the injector.
-If it is leaking gas from the metal can on the injector, the pressure regulator is bad.
-If its leaking from the lines the lines are bad.

You can get a new pressure regulator from rockauto.com. They're the cheapest I've found. If its the lines, you will have to get new lines and seals from a dealer.

Don't forget to get a new upper intake/ plentum gasket (napa)

Most likley the ignition module, which is in your distributor. Mine pooped out this past winter. Thought it was a fuel problem. Replaced the fuel pump then the darn thing stalled out for good away from home. Luckily for me the fellow who works on our company trucks was close and that is what it was. If I remember right he pulled off one plug wire and it started up. Might just be better off to replace the distributor itself. Get a fuel pressure test and check for constant spark. Originally I was fooled into thinking it was a fuel only problem, since I could get it to hit on starting fluid when it pulled it's random stalling routine. Just a weak spark... But also while you are at it check under the Vortec plate as instructed. Mine is idleing like crap now months later, and I have a little fuel piled around my injector and a little washing near the rear of the plenum. Guess it will be a new injector spider assy for me sometime soon.
