Wierd Stalling/Surging Problem

Well I got in my car after work and was driving to my girlfriends house when I noticed the Check engine light came on, but the car drove fine. Anyways, 1 1/2 later I left my girlfriends house and the light came on again, but this time my car stalled. In fact, on my 15 min. trip home it stalled 4 times, all while I was slowing down or at a stop...but didn't do it everytime.

I was also getting some surging, when I'd let go of the pedal the RPM's would drop to 500 or below, but then shoot up about 500-1000 RPM's.

Also surges while stopped, and a little bit of a rough idle.

I noticed that my lights would dim out intermittantly, I'm not sure if they dimmed when the RPM's went down, but I know all my lights dimmed.

After the stall, I would have a hard startup but if I didn't stall my car would startup fine.

Any idea of what would cause this problem? My car stalled about 1 month ago twice just like this but went away until tonight, didn't notice any surging then.

I've had the recall done and have a brand spankin new FPR because I was getting hard starts, so it can't be one of those.

I'm thinking maybe the fuel pump? Thanks guys for any feedback you can give me.

first thing I would suggest is to find out what the codes are. After that, it will likely be easier to diagnose. If it's after 95 try Autozone.

I would have said replace the FPR but you have already had that done. My 98 was doing the same thing and all I did was cleaned the throttle body and replaced the FPR and now it runs like a dream.

Re: Wierd Stalling/Surging Problem

My car is doing the same thing, but it is drinking fuel like you wouldn't believe. I was thinking it was a part on the passenger side back by the firewall. It has three spots for lines. Only one is hooked up and the line goes across the back top of the motor to a connector that ends up going to some fuel lines. The part has electrical wires to it like a sensor. I thought this might be the problem. I don't understand where the others would go. The codes say that it is the massair flow. I know it is located in the air intake. Hate to pay that money if it wasn't it.

Took mine to my mechanic today and all it was was a dirty EGR valve. They took it out, cleaned it, and put it back in and all is good.

Cost $130 all in all to fix.

sbronzell got hosed! The code in your computer should be EGR pintle position. Just take the two screws holding the egr vavle down and un hook the sensor and and flush the valve with air intake cleaner and work the pintle up and down a bit, maybe let the cleaner soak for a bit. Once you can move the pintle freely without it sticking at all, put i back on and you'll be fine. It' been good for me for about a year now.
