focus upgrades?

i currently own a focus 1.8 zetec and am aware of the extensive work that needs doing if i want to install a turbo, i was just wondering if there were any quick cheap methods of upgrading the engine and overall performance of the car, without major cost being involved?

Re: focus upgrades?

Is this a Euro Focus? I'm not too familiar with the 1.8 Zetec, but the best place to start with almost all cars would be with a good intake and exhaust system to help the engine breath better.

it is the european version, yeah. i have already installed an exhaust but was advised against an intake as it causes problems

naturally i didnt listen, and installed one anyway but it caused the car to almost gasp for air while driving in high revs, aswell as virtually doubling the fuel consumption.

You are saying your focus tried to make up for the *little* extra air it was getting by adding more fuel into the mixture? Interesting ECU. I don't know much about the focus, but maybe you should plug you MAF sensor to the point where you run lean.:P

I can't see how a simple intake can cause a major problem. You bearly get any more air than stock, unless the factory one is THAT restrictive.

So, how much hp does the 1.8 litre make?

only about 137 bhp, it still reaches 135mph and 0-60 in 9.5 seconds, when its supposibly 10.9 seconds. it also kept up with a Alfa 156 t-spark in a flat out race, which i was impressed with. the alfa pulled away shortly after 70mph but the opening was impressive.
i am planning on selling it soon though to make way for my dream FTO, when my insurance comes down a bit :-s
