after '94/95 most all GM vehicles were of the newer OBD II design.
much more sophisticated than just jumping leads to flash the engine light, this system not only monitors engine operation, the transmission, air/fuel management, emissions, etc.
some basic readers and scanners can be had for under $100.
Actron sells a CP9135 via websites or AutoZone for under $89.
this will not only give you the code number, but a brief desc. of that code meaning, and will also give you PASS/Not Ready indicators of all your sensors that an inspection station uses to test your vehicle for compliance.

and at
harborfreight.com

a retail store/mail order, you can get a generic code "reader"
(I say reader as it will give you code numbers, not reset the engine light(you would either change the component and drive 'til the ECM resets, or disconnect the POS(+) battery cable to reset the light), and not give you a brief description of potential problem (this you would have to look up on a website)) for about $35-40. USD

an Auto Zone will scan and read your codes at no charge (thereby assisting you to make a purchase of the potentially faulty component)
and possibly other parts houses will as well, I am not sure.

hope this helps,
chris

If you describe the problem(s) you are having people on this forum might be able to help diagnose your problem, eliminating the need to read the codes. It is popssible that the problem you are having might not even produce a code.
