Remote Starter?

Hey everyone, i was thinking about getting a remote start for my 2000 alero 2.4, but ive heard that they are not good for your car...but with the hot summers and coooolllddd winters that ohio gets, i thought having remote start would be cool to warm the car up or cool it down. anyone had any bad luck with them? any suggestions? thanks a lot

Re: Remote Starter?

i've never put one in an alero, so I can't comment there.. But I love the one in my F150. In MN the winters can be brutal, and coming out to a warm car is very nice.

had one on a govt. contract vehicle:
'93 Jeep Cherokee
in alaska
it's great!
it even had temp control, so if climate dipped below X (whatever value you set), she'd fire up for 10-12 min. just to make sure no freeze plugs laying on the ground next morning. this vehicle is at the our dealership now, and the remote and everything still works(almost 10yr old unit)... just never gets down to ten degrees here in Houston, TX.

I'd advise it. (just not in a manual trans car)

I wouldn't advise putting in the remote car starter. I received one as a gift for xmas a couple of years back - worked fine for the first year and half, then tried it one night and the car shut down, giving me a "security" error message.

Dealership had to reset the Security/Computer...couldn't understand or fix the problem. Happened a couple times again, I now don't use it, just too many headaches.

Re: Remote Starter?

mgs2006,i would give you a neg on that. I heard of stories that it would start the car up and then keep turning and i will kill your starter. P.S. What have you been up to? I have not heard from you in a while.

i have one in my 1999 2.4 alero and it was awesome for about 8 months, then it up and quit working, i didnt have keyless entry or anything so it also gave me that nice addition, but now thats all it has for me. BestBuy was my mistake, but i worked there and it was cheap. I heard a story from the guy at bestbuy when i was in getting it fixed that they just installed one in a brand new H2 Hummer and it burned it to the ground the next day because the starter stuck on and something caught on fire. So maybe its not such a good idea. although my girlfriends mom had one in her Dodge Caravan for about 10 years it seems like and it has never given her any single problem. so maybe it is situation specific. who knows? I say go for it it is a hell of a sweet deal in the winter (iowa). I really love mine and bestbuy's insurance will pay for it if it is destroyed.
