i put a new head on my 88 civic hb dx now i need help with timing...PLEASE HELP!!!

okay i put a new cylinder head (d16a6 head) on my d15b2 block due to the fact that my old head was warped...

okay i readed in my haynes book about how to do timing and it says put my 1# cylinder on tdc on the compression stroke... but my engine is still over heating like hell!! heres my questions please help...

1. how do i know im on compression stroke and not on exhaust,,

2. i can't see the marks on my bottom pully to line up with the cover..should i take off the bottom cover to line them up and if i line them up does that mean just put my upper cam pully at 12 o'clock then put the distrubuter at 1# cylinder.... and if i should take off the bottom timing cover how do i get it off...

please give me steps to do ....thanks
