shortys dont work !

this is for anyone who is putting a motor in their camaro and who is also thinking about putting shorty headers on there too. Stop. they dont work. I bought a pair of shorty headers and i thought theyd work, yeah they can bolt to the block just fine, but they wont clear the cross member that runs underneath the engine. So therefore, they will not work. I shoulda got the Angled shorty headers. oh well, you live and you learn. im just tryin to forewarn any of yall.

Well its obvious that they would KILL performance, so maybe there.

Re: Re: shortys dont work !

You have to be more specific about which headers.... Plenty of shorty style headers that do work great.

Re: shortys dont work !

I heard shorty's aren't really worth it, on some engines they do nothing but look cool, on others they add a few horses but I've never heard of anything noticeable, not saying I hear a lot about them though. I got a set of Pacesetter Mid-Lengths that work great, added a touch to the sound and even more to power. Not quite as much as LT's but these are cheaper and still emission legal

Re: shortys dont work !

well I ran my camaro with the stock log shaped manifolds when I first put the motor in and later once I was ready for my real exhaust swapped the manifolds for Ceramic coated Shorty Hookers and it was an incredible difference. I would say the switch from manifolds to shorties is worth more power than from shorties to long tubes. Yeah the long tubes may give you a little more bottom-mid range torque, but smoothing out the path coming right out the exhaust ports is what I think is important- I mean air doesn't like making sharp 90 degree bends. And by the way those hooker shorties fit excellent, and I would recommend them.

I was talking about the shortys that go strait down. kinda like the tubes collect right in the middle between cyl's 4 and 6's exhaust port. they wont work cuz the yhit the cross member and the motor mounts. Hey i gota bigger problem. i ordered a custom pair of headers for my 88 camaro w/a 305 and i got the drivers side header on just fine, but the passenger side wont go on cuz it keeps hitting the inner part ofthe camaro... kinda the firewall but on the bottom side of the car. and its just gettin wedged between the bell housing and that. I dont know what im doin wrong but hedman and jegs keep tellin me that if i have the right part #'s and all that, they will work. i need some help on this people. maybe theres been someone else out there thats run into this problem.

thanks yall.

Re: shortys dont work !

I kinda know the area you are talking about and my headers are real close to the very bottom of the firewall. Do the headers line up even close to the head, or are they way off? I mean if you dented in the area a little would they fit?

well they line up eve nwith the head but the header slopes downward towards the rear of the car just enough to where none of the bolt holes except the first one, will be high enough. its not a very steep decline, but just enough to where none of the other holes will line up. I may just have to whack them whith my hammer or somethin. but i dunno what im gonna do. i used to think headers were gonna be easy to put on, but theyre a total bitch. especially on camaros. help me dude.

Re: shortys dont work !

well i guess see how easy you can dent in the area where they hit. if you get it banged in enough so they fit make enough clearance to allow for engine movement, at least 1/4 inch clearance. You can heat up the metal with a torch to soften it if there is nothing in the way to get burnt. it sounds like you got more trouble with your headers than i had fitting manifolds on my s10! and yours are made for that car! I wouldn't dent up the headers unless you absolutely can't dent the firewall enough. What brand are they anyways?

theyre hedman headers. I went from a v6 2.8 with a r4 tranny to a 305 w/a a turbo 350 tranny in my 88 camaro. i called hedman and they said that i must be doing something wrong cuz "they sell them headers all the time". and they said that the bell housing are the same widths from the r4 and the 350 turbo so i dunno what to do. im thinking about cutting away part of the tranny bell housing. maybe thats not a good idea but i dunno what to do.

Re: shortys dont work !

so are they hitting the tranny or the firewall? There are "ears" on a 700r4 that stick out maybe 1-2 inches on either side on the area where the torque convertor cover bolts up. On my s10 I sawzalled off the ear on one side to make more room for my exhaust, and my tranny in my camaro came with the ears already cut off (TCI streetfighter 700r4). If thats all that is in the way cut it off.
