Oil Leaking

Does or did anyone kniw about oil leaking from the back of the engine on a 3.1L. I can see a flat area behind the EFI where oil is coming out. I was told of a "use to be" distrubuter but with this engine, they have something else in there. Know, it's leaking out and I wonder how difficult it is to fix.

The area you are talking about is where the distributer was at one time. They put a plug in the hole that has an O-ring around it to keep the oil from leaking out. It isn't hard to change but it can be hard to get to. Just replace the O-ring and reinstall the plug.

I just fixed the same leak on my car. Under the trottle body there is what appears to be were the dist. was but what it is does is the rod that goes deep into the engine turn the oil pump. This is a about a 3 hour job at the most. If you are mech. inclined it shouldn't be to difficult. The part you will need to replace is an o-ring you can pick up at an auto parts store or better yet the dealership for a little over a buck.

I would put a gasket at the top as added insurance. The fel-pro part numbers are 70800 for the o-ring and 70194 for the paper gasket. You didn't say what year your car is, but you'll need a throttle body mounting gasket also, as it has to be removed for clearance to get to the oil pump drive shaft. Give me the year and I'll give you that part number too.

This is a great site. I'm new and desprite to get her running and leak free. I can't believe I'm loose all that oil for under 2 bucks in parts. It's a 95 3.1L engine. I can change parts in the car like alt, start, do all breaks and some other things. Is this something a "general" person can do? I wish there was some type of procedure. Can you tell me what parts of the engine I really need to remove? Thanks alot!!

While I'm here, let me ask this. She isn't starting. The lights come on but not turning over. I replaced the starter, it worked. However, the oil leak is rather bad. Now, she won't turn over. Is the Starter "grounded" to the engine? If oil is down believe and not grounded good, would this happen?

yes, your starting problem could be related to the oil, as the battery ground cable is bolted to one of the engine to transaxle bolts. Your throttle body gasket is fel pro #60983. It's a relatively easy fix. The O-ring can get stuck in the engine, so you may need a pair of channel locks to help you pull the assembly out. Make sure the octagon shaped shaft comes out with the assembly, and you line it up when you put it back together. The whole thing should just drop back down in. Don't try to force it or you could damage the oil pump. The shaft is retained by a bolt that goes thru a bracket, like an old small block chevy distributor and I believe it is a 13mm headed bolt.
