Overheat
I have a 1990 900 turbo always gets very hot when idling. I replaced the water pump, thermostat, coolant, temp sending unit. I took out the thermostat and it still overheats. The temp gauge climbs to just below the red. When I open the bleeder valve near the thermostat, I keep getting alot of air. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

you should be able to watch coolant trickle out of the petcock at the thermostat if the reservoir is full. sounds like you have a nasty airbubble in there. i have worked on 900's for a long time and have never had a bubble in one. you probably have a blown headgasket, which is pushing exhaust in the cooling system. do you have access to a block tester? it is a device you put in the opening of the reservoir, you put a chemical in the device and it will turn colors if it detects exhaust gasses in your coolant. this will prove it for you. i assume you have a bunch of dried coolant around the turbo flange. that is also a good indicator of headgasket problems.

Thanks for the info. Do you know of any type of additive that I can use in the oil or coolant to resolve this problem? I really don't want to pull the head off. When I added the coolant back in it only took one gallon. Is that normal?

that head needs to come off. i am sorry. there is nothing that will fix it other than a new head gasket. as for how much coolant it took; i cant answer that because i dont know exactly what is going on. if it burps all of your coolant out after running a while, but not overheating, it may burp a liter or 4 liters. i dont know.

hello dawg, i know this is a late post and not much activity here in saabland but i didn't see you mention anything about changing the radiator or having it rodded out. have you found a solution to your problem? the car seems pretty old and the radiator could be all clogged up. an honest radiator shop could help you.

Yup, 15 years and no amount of flushing is gonna clear up mechanical blockage. So hey dawgslife, any conclusion to your dilemna? Let us know!
