Transmission Decisions
Hey all,
I have an 87 half ton 2wd with a tbi 5.7 and 700r4 behind it. I plan to transfer the body and motor to a 3/4 ton 4wheel drive chassis here in the near future, but here lies the problem. The chassis already has a th400 (not sure of condition) with a gear drive transfer case. Which route is the better way to go here? I have been told by some to get a used 700r4 for a 4wd and be done with it , but others say just rebuild and keep the 400. I know the 700 is not the most highly ranked trans in some circles but I have had no problems with the one I have in the 2wheel. The other thing is if I kept the 400 how do I keep the computer from screwing up thinking the 700 is still there?? Thanks for any help!! |

Re: Transmission Decisions
Well the biggest difference between the 700r4 and TH400 is the over-drive on the 700r4, if you do alot of highway driving then you should really consider the 700r4. The TH400 is known to be a little stronger and more reliable, if you tow or are going to abuse the truck off-road then I would problay stick with the TH400. Most likely your Th400 is backed by a NP205 which is one of the best transfer cases ever built so you'll want to keep that and you can buy adapters to put a 700r4 in front of it.
