AC not to cold..sucks!

1997 4x4 blazer...4.3

My A/C was not blowing cold at all. I brough it to the dealer where I bought it, and they recharged it ( SO SAY ) well its still blows warm air, but when I get on the highway it cools off a bit, but not enough for me to turn it down. I really feel it should be putting out a lot more cold air than that, even when im idleing. Any suggestions? Anyone have a 97, and is this air rate normal?

Re: AC not to cold..sucks!

refill it yourself with one of the kits from Autozone.

Get one with a gauge and follow the instructions.

Sounds like your refrigerant is low.

I have a 97 like yours. Mine started blowing warm/lukewarm air and it was a bad compressor. The compressor and clutch still spun around like they are supposed to, but it was not compressing the freon correctly. Yours may be on its very last leg. Maybe the higher highway speed spin the compressor a little better so it sorks a little better. Could be your condensor coil is very very dirty and the extra air you get at highway speed is helping out your A/C system.

If your dealer already recharged it, then you recharging it with your own autozone kit is not going to do anything (feel free to try anyways though - because a new compressor will set you back about $250).

Also get a new orifice tube if you replace the compressor. When they eat themselves, all the metal bits clog up the orifice tube. I suppose it is also possible that you just have a clogged orifice tube. However, about the only thing I can think of that would clog an orifice tube in the A/C system is metal bits from a bad compressor.

Compressor is easy to replace, but you will lose all your R134a and will need to recharge it correctly when you are done. Most people say you should replace the dryer also when you replace the compressor.

First let's see if he has a leak before we have him replace expensive components when we really don't even know what the problem is.

I second Blazer LT. Also, get one of the refill kits that have oil and refrigerant in them. (actually, most of the kits do).

My 1997 needed two cans of refrig this summer but is blowing strong and cool now and beat $$$ for a new compressor.

Thanks for the input. I will deffinitely try the refil kit myself. I really dont want to spend the money on a pump. I just want a comfortable, nice looking, tough truck.

Re: AC not to cold..sucks!

Just fllow the directions on the kit to the letter.

Also, get a kit with a gauge and has AC system oil with the refrigerant.

Don't just get the refill bottle and dump it in.
