Transmissions.
I have a some questions here,
1: would an automatic tranny be any good in drift, or auto cross? (id like to try both of them atleast once) i orginally planned to go with a t56 but now i am un sure if that would be a good thing or not, some ppl go with 4.11 gears out back for acceleration, but if you raise the gears in the tranny so that even with 4.11 gears out back you have the same acceleration but now a new higher top speed, but you could go to like 5.11 rear gears and get that acceleration back up, but with the tall gears you wouldnt be shifting from 1st, untill later, like 40-50 mph (maybe more). 2: would it be worth having a manual that you prob wont even get out of 1st gear in? 3: what i said up above is just an example, i donno i might go with 5.38 rear and slightly taller tranny gears then stated above. why go for such a high top speed with that kind of acceleration? if i do get the chance to take it to a drag strip i will blow past alot of stuff. in the end it shouldnt be much diffrent then a normal car with 4.11 gears out back, just with a higher top speed. 4: what do you think? auto or manual? would it be worth it in the end? is auto any good for drift or autocross?

Im actually pretty sure its easy with both as long as you know what you're doing. I think it would be HARDER to drift with a manual since you got to keep downshifting/ upshifting unless you're really good, and I mean good like able to shift perfectly to make your car faster because its a manual than an auto. I really think its opinion.

Actually you need to put one of your feet sideways I think, well you do need to do this to make a turn perfectly when racing with a manual, you got to use both feet, have one sideways pushing the gas and brake at the same time and your other pushing the clutch.

Re: Transmissions.
you will want a manual because you can control it more. in drifting you want it to stay in one gear while spinning the tires so they keep going and when you mash the gas it doesnt down shift. and in autocross you'll want manual because of the same reason that you need control and you dont want it to downshift on hard accelerations. So the best thing to do is learn how to shirt fast and learn what gear you need to be in

Oh and Viper... I may be wrong here... but I seem to remember someone saying someplace that if you have the gears too tall the engine won't be strong enough to move them. AND, if you're gonna have a 2.xx or 3.xx first gear and then 5.11's.... what in the hell would that accomplish for a street car.... 5.11's @ 22" tires @ first gear of 3.xx @ 35 MPH = 8200 RPM's... BABOOOOMMMMM!!! BYE BYE CAR 5.38's pushes it up to 8600 RPM's - RichmondGear.Com Street Gear Calculator. I'm having the same issue, trying to figure out what rear to put in with which trans, and which is better in terms of performance and cost. Posting my own thread ... slightly different issues. |

Re: Transmissions.
wouldnt a automatic with a manual valve body be best because you can keep it in the gear you want but you dont have to worry about the clutch.

Re: Transmissions.
it should if the tranny is from a V8 bird. If Im not mistaken all of the LS and LT engines are built on a 350 block so it should work

Re: Transmissions.
then it wont fit and you wouldnt want that with a V8 it cant handle the power. I had the same problem when I was about to get a new engine for my 'maro and I dont think there are any trannys that will bolt to both
