Dodge Dakota P0455

about 3 days after i bought my dakota the check engine light came on, i did some web surfing and found that the error code is P0455 evap system leak ( http://www.allpar.com/fix/computer-codes.html ) but i cant find any thing on how to trubleshoot it. any ideas?

P0455 is a "large leak detected" in the evap system,you should take your gas cap off and tap it on a workbench or another hard surface,if rust comes out then the check valve or vent is probably stuck in the cap,sometimes just the tapping will free it up,or you can take the cap apart from the underside and free everything up inside,or you could just replace it,but that takes all of the fun out of it..........

I tryed the gas cap taping the gas cap, no rust. Still my engine light is on so I bought a new gas cap. no results. I disconected the battery to try and get the light to reset that didnt work eather. Is there any thing else I can check?

P0455 has to do with the NVLD pump circuit of the EVAP system. Chances are you have a small pinhole leak in the line(s). It's not a serious driveability code, it'll just light up check engine light b/c the pressure is not building up in the system properly. You can go to a shop and have them smoke test your system to see if they can locate the leak.

I ended up taking it to the dealership it took the guy about 30 sec to find the leak there is a charcal filter ,on the under side of the truck just behind the driver seat, that has a vacume hose that has been known to crack. this was my problem.
