flex - fuel

Is anyone had any experience with the flex fuel motors. I was getting about 17.5 mpg according to Computer with gas and I tried this E 85 since gas was 2.57 gallon and now the computer has been dropping and now it is at 12.9 mpg with half a tank left and 100 miles on the tank. I dont get what the point of the E 85 is if this is the results you get.

Anyone else have any encounters?

Ya that sounds about right. My freinds dads truck has a flex fuel 5.3 he tryed E85 once and he got horable milage. My dads suburban has one to but we dont have any gas stations around here that sell E so i havnt seen the effects first hand but my freind said the only thing E85 does is make less hydro carbons and shirink your wallet and performence.I like good ol 92+ octane with a little shot of unleaded racing fuel my self .Seince there is a gas station around here that sells that stuff.

It is gas that is 85% etanol (corn) and it is less pollutive.

Re: flex - fuel

no one ever said that being Earth friendly would be less expensive or more efficient.... E85 is just a way to help out the enviroment.... maybe if/once the stuff is mass produced on a scale comparible to gasoline, it might drop the price enough to be worth it, but that is unlikely.

Re: flex - fuel

E85 is found in many states including my state Wisconsin - and Minnesota and Iowa. E85 is cheaper because of government subsidies. Without subsidies - E85 would sell for 3.00 a gallon.

More importantly - E85 is marketed and advertised as "cheaper" to buy - and it is. But it also uses more E85 to achieve each mile traveled. Literally stated - E85 has less energy per gallon than does gasoline - most vehicles capable of flex-fuel will notice a 12% to 20% reduction in mileage results of highway driving using E85 over normal gas. You pay less as a consumer - and you get less as a consumer - and the government pays more for cleaner environment. "The jury" is still out - on what effects E85 will have on your engine - with pros and cons to be considered.
