Bumpers

Recently bought '78 MGB (nice). Bumpers looked great, but when I spilled a bit of fuel during fillup it appears some type of "thin coating" was removed and now looks "splotchy".....any thoughts on correcting? Are there products to apply for "restoring these bumpers?

Thanks

Sounds like you had 'tire black' painted on your bumpers as an attempt by PO to make the bumpers pretty. You could get more 'tire black' at the auto store and patch it up. The unadulterd bumpers are made of a relatively porous rubber that's very difficult to get a consistant surface on.

Ironically, I met an owner with perfect looking bumpers and when I asked if they were new, he told me that he'd wet sanded them with gasoline! I would be very careful about doing this, as it's only anecdotal at this point, but I suppose that the solvent nature of the gasoline could aid in smoothing an otherwise porous surface.
