radio has no sound

HI: I have a 2002 venture van and my problem is that the radio works for a while then all of a sudden there is no sound. I can play the radio change stations or cd's but no sound. This is a random event and can last from a few days to a few minutes. I even replaced the radio with 2 other radios and am having the same problem with them. Any ideas? Thanks.... Alan

Re: radio has no sound

I was going to sugest a problem with the amplifier circuit but if you have replaced the unit then that does not make sense.

Do you have an integrated unit with the tuner, CD player and amp in one or is there a separate amplifier?

If it is integrated and you have tried a number of units I would suggest a power or ground wire. However this would cause the whole unit to stop operating and you seem to suggest that the CD player is still spinning. I would check this. You may also have a very loose connector.

If you have a separate amp then you might have a faulty amp or faulty wiring to the amp.

Thanks DRW1000

HI: The unit is integrated. It has the CD Tape amp and Radio all in one. We bought the van new in 2002 and never had any problem up until about a month ago. You can still change radio stations and all the info displays including which song is playing or load a cd and change the tracks but no sound. Like I said you will be driving along and all of sudden it loses the sound. It might come on in a few minutes or take several weeks to get the sound back. I checked the fuse, pulled the radio to check for loose connections and like I said I tried 2 other radios and had to pay $35.00 each to have them unlocked. The dealer said they think it's an internal radio problem but like you with 3 different radios I don't see how.Maybe I'll try running a seperate ground wire from the chasis to the van. Thanks for the info.... Alan

Re: radio has no sound

I was origionally going to suggest a problem inside the unit such as a cold solder joint but 3 units with the same trouble pretty much rules that out.

I assume the unit has common power and ground so they appear to be okay. I would look at some sort of connector issue to the speakers from the back of the unit. Must be a point common to all 4 speakers.

Re: radio has no sound

I'm having the same weird problem with my 2005 Uplander which I assume is basically the same system. Because it happens so rarely though, I haven't brought it to the dealer for warranty work. The fact that we both have this problem though, makes me think that there might be a TSB out there for this problem. Sorry I can't be more help. If you ever find the cause of your problem, please post the details.
