GSR or Type R

I am looking at putting a new engine in my civic LX next summer. I am considering the B18. But I dont know if its better to get the GSR or Type R. I will probably just do bolt ons but might turbo it, probably not though. Which one is better in terms of reliability, strength, and response to modifications? The GSR is appx. $3,500 and the Type R $4,700. Both full conversions.

I would perosonally go with the GSR, just in case you decide to turbo, a type R has higher compression so you probally won't be able to boost as high before changing the internals. Plus, a GSR swap with LSD is about a 1000 less than the type R swap. for that 1000 you can do a full tune up, camshafts and gears, maybe even an exhaust or headers and still have a little $$ left over.

Yeah i noticed that(compression) also. I think the GSR is supposed to be a pretty direct swap into my car, except for a couple mounts? Ive been weighing several options such as rebuilt/turbo d16, or b16 and even new car. But with the moderate amount of work I already have done to this car, I decided to just give it some new life instead of spend money on a new car that could have alot of problems.

What crack-smoking land do you live in where you can do cams, cam gears, and exhaust for a grand and still have cash left over?

Denso plugs:55
Magnacore wires:100
OEM Cap & Rotor:35
Type R or other stage 1 cams:600
Skunk 2 Cam Gears 220
those are some of the higher prices I found so maybe without a set of headers or exhaust but, that is why I said maybe even headers or exhaust. and why call me out when another person said he can go FI for the 1000 he saves with a gsr

Well right now im only looking at the motor alone. no add ons yet. so i figure $4,000 for the motor, shipped, and new belts, etc. my friend and I can install it in a couple days, and have about 150whp. hmm...kinda alot of money for that.

Re: GSR or Type R

The B18C3/5 (DC2 ITR) is meant for being an NA screamer just like the K20A in the DC5 ITR. So yeah if you want to turbo go the B18C1 (GSR) route and use the extra money for the turbo and plumbing. I personally would go for the ITR engine for rarity sake (and cuz I'm an NA fan).

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha. You guys crack me up. I love this site. No but to stay on the subject, I agree, stay with the GSR motor. As a matter of fact tommorrow morning I'm most likely getting a GSR motor with LSD tranny installed in my ride. I'm so excited. I'll let you know how it goes.

Just to let you know, NA is awsome. Turbo is cool butexpensive and more to worry about. If you do want to think about turboing the GSR is better. But if you are going to stay NA the Type-R is better. The difference in stock performance between a GSR and Type-R is night and day. A car with a stock Type-R swap is going to spank the same car with GSR swap. A friend of mine has a 1993 Civic hatch with a Type-R. He has i/h/e, skunk2 coilovers and his car is gutted. On slicks he ran a 12.98, and that's a pretty much stock motor. Another friend has a 1992 hatch with the same setup except he has the GSR and his best time is 14.02. So there is a big difference in stock performance. Now the guy with the GSR has a turbo and 280whp, but he hasn't run it yet.
