[Tech Question]Transmission Swap
Okay, as some of you know, I'm really trying to get into the performance lines for my firebird. Primarily I'm wanting to get into auto-x and road course racing. Unfortunately I drive an automatic V6 and I am pretty happy with the bullet proof tendencies of the 3800.
I am getting tired of the automatic and I can not, for the life of me, find a V6 Firebird with a manual transmission for sale around here at the dealerships. So if I can't buy one, build one right? How hard will it be to convert my car over to a manual transmission and what equipment will be needed to go along with this swap? Secondly, what will I have to do to disable the bloody speed limiter/cutoff around that nice little 120mph range? I'm trying to figure some of this out to get geared up for mods and dyno work as some of the guys running their Turbo V6's are getting botched numbers because of the fuel cutoff issue.

Re: [Tech Question]Transmission Swap
Speed limiter is controled by the computer. Needs removed from there.
Tranny swap isn't cheap. The most expensive part is the tranny of course, but the little things will eat you up as well. Any idea of what tranny you are looking at?? Figure that out first, then see how much it costs to mate it to your motor.

Well I'm looking into a 5-Speed manual, but a 6 might be in my sights. The SLP V6 Firebird GT is inspiring me, even though it seems nobody has any in depth information on it. I'm going to start looking around in the salvage yards for *shudder* dead birds. The majority of the work can be done in my dad's shop, I'm not experienced with in-depth work on this car, but I catch on damned fast. With the help of my dad, things will go alot faster. I found a V6 Manual Camaro at the local ford dealership (waaay in the back) but it's a hard top and a Camaro. I'd rather stick with the Firebirds as they appeal to my taste so much better. Oh well, I'm going to start leaving contact information at some of these places to let them know I'm interested in finding what I need.
Overall, I'm researching things and asking for experienced views from those here in the community. This probably won't go down until next summer or maybe spring break at the earliest. South Padre is overrated anyway right? j/k

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves for exploiting your beautiful birds that way! I'd never resort to that to get a guy angela |

Re: [Tech Question]Transmission Swap
Yeah, for the speed limiter your going to have to get your computer tuned like Mr. Luos said. There's no way to get rid of it, so what tuner shops do is they raise it up to like 200mph. So as to give you the feeling that it's not there, since the odds of you hitting 200mph are very very slim.
As for the tranny swap. Well, I've read on the 3.4's tranny's. And the engines with the manual tranny's apparently have different flywheels from the engines with automatic tranny's. Not sure if it's that way with the 3800, but it's something I'd check into if I were you.
