Unhappy 89 cherokee dash and tail lights

my tail lights and dash lights dont work on my 89 cherokee laredo. But my brake lights, head lights, and dome lights work. What is the problem?

Re: 89 cherokee dash and tail lights

first thing to check is the fuse for the park lights, its the same fuse that controls the dash lights. We can go from there.

Re: 89 cherokee dash and tail lights

If you recently installed a new stereo (or had it installed) it could be a short in the wire that contected the light in the stock stereo. I had this problem whe i installed my stereo the first time. Took me about 4 fuses to figure it out!!!

One day after I bought it I was driving on the highway and my radio stopped working and I just noticed that night that my dash and tail lights didn't work. A couple of days ago I installed a cd player and it works. If it is a short in the wiring, how much would it cost to have someone fix it. I checked all the fuses under the dash and they are all good. What do I do?

Thanks Brian

Re: 89 cherokee dash and tail lights

it could be a short in any one of the tail light sockets, or wiring, or it could be the headlight switch is shorting out (switch not expensive). Do you have a trailer hitch, the trailer hitch wiriing could be shorting, another good place to look. You will have to do some testing. To find electrical problems most shop charge an hourly rate until they find it. Not something you can get a flat rate price on until they find the source.
