1987 4 Runner Manifold Glowing Red

Hello,

My husband just bought a 1984 4Runner last night. He drove it on the freeway for about 1/2 hour and the manifold became bright red. The former owner said he had the engine rebuilt and that the timing was off. Also the exhaust smells.

Could this all be due to the timing being off or could it be something else. It is not overheating just to note.

Yes, if the timing is retarded it will make the car run hot. That is most likely the problem.
