Hub assembly
I need a new hub assembly for my 97 grand prix for the front passenger side. How difficult is this to put on? I would like to do this myself but have never messed with anything like this before. Is there a site that describes the steps?

You'll probably have to rent special tools such as the large socket, breaker bar to get leverage, and torque wrench. I think that axle nut is like a 31 or a 35mm.

Re: Hub assembly
a hub is definitely a DIY job. IF you can do brakes, you can do a hub. Buy a repair manual, so you have the proper torque specs, and read the literature that comes with the replacement hub. IF the replacement hub specifies a different torque than teh repair manual, use the spec that comes with the hub bearing. Changes in design of the bearing can affect the torque for proper bearing pre-load. The #1 MOST important thing to remember is to avoid using impact tools, as the vibration they create can damage the ABS sensor contained in the hub. Use hand tools only and torque everything to spec, and you shouldn't have any problems. Also, clean the mounting surface between the hub and the spindle of rust or dirt.

Re: Re: Hub assembly
Personally, I wouldn't classify doing a hub and bearing assembly in the category of brakes. Brakes are a lot easier with simple hand tools.
If you decide to tackle the job yourself and if you are having problem getting the hub and bearing assembly off, you will need a Front Hub Spindle Remover to force the axle away from the hub. Its GM Part number (J-28733-A) or equivalent. Re: Hub assembly
what I was getting at is the proceedures aren't difficult, and if you have the mechanical ability to do your own brakes, you can do your own hub. Yes it does require some special tools, but you can rent them for free at some "box" stores.

![]() Free tool renting yes but only after the hassle of a security deposit in which you'll get back as long as you bring the tool back in one piece.
