should have bought a chevy

Just kidding, I love my 1994 Taurus. However, when I speed up and let off the gas, it seems like its in neutral until I rev it up, Then it slams into gear and works fine. At about 45 mph, it cycles in and out of overdrive very violently, its broken the motor mounts and makes it hard to drink a cup of coffee. I changed the fluid and filter with no avail, I have spent hardly anything on this car in the last 50,000 miles and it starts every time and its not worth much, but I will scrap it in a heartbeat before I dump a bunch of cash into it. Any ideas for a quick fix or does anyone need Taurus parts???? michael.

Re: should have bought a chevy

Does it downshift violently when slowing down to a stop, say around 15-20mph? Does the cruise control work? Sounds like the VSS if both are true. Though I'm not 100% sure 94's were electronically controlled.
The only other thing I can think of is a bad piston in one of the valves, but I think that affects the tranny when pulling away from a stop.

Re: Re: should have bought a chevy

Yes it does, The Snap-On scanner at work said something about the VSS and the cruise control quit working about the same time. It sounds to me like it might be the VSS, now all I have to do is find the damn thing. There isn't much room to work where Alldata says it is, I'll try putting it up on the lift and see if I can get to it. Thanks a lot for your reply, I'll try it today and let you know. michael

Re: should have bought a chevy

It's right above where the passenger side axle leaves the tranny. To get to it in the car requires you to reach in between the engine block and rear exhaust manifold. I've heard it's (more) accessible from underneath if you drop the exhaust system.
Mine's gone out 3 times in 6 years. This last time I attempted it myself but couldn't even reach the damn thing. I could see it, using a mechanic's mirror and a flash light, but that's it.
The part itself is about $30. Labor was $150. There's supposed to be a heat shield over it as well.

Re: Re: should have bought a chevy

I raised it up on a lift and after much searching, I finally felt the thing we are dealing with. Now I know why they charge so much for labor. The book shows 1.8 hours to replace it, the part is $32. It's going to be fun, I can already tell. The exhaust has to come out to get to it. thanks, michael

Re: Re: Re: should have bought a chevy

Talk about a pain in the ass, I finally got around to replacing it. I had to remove the exhaust and twist like a pretzel to reach it. for something that only has 1 bolt it sure was a lot of work. The good thing about it is the part was only $15, the bad part is it didn't fix it. I'll check the tranny next. thanks, michael.
