Power windows and lock problem 97 Cherokee

i have a 97 cherokee and here is the problem:

The drivers switches:
all the power windows work fine from the drivers control switches when the car is off and on. the unlock button works when the car is both off and on from the drivers switch, but the lock button does not lock from the drivers switch when the car is on; it works when the car is off

The passanger and back switches:
none of the power windows work from these switches with the car off or on. the unlock button works when the car is both off and on. the lock button does not work until i take out the fuse and replace it and use the passange side first. if i use the drivers side first, the niether work after that attempt.

I checked the fuses and none were bad. i checked for a loose connection but none was evident at the switch connections. i know there is a short somewhere but i am not sure where to even begin to find it. Any suggestions?

Try looking into the driver's door harness between the switches and the kick panel for breaks and a short.

Re: Re: Power windows and lock problem 97 Cherokee

i have checked all that i can but i think that the drivers control panel is shorting out or something. i think that it had this problem before i bought it also, because the panel is poking up from where someone tried to unsnap the top cover, not knowing that you have to undo the screws from the inside...duh. but i am still not sure if it is that.

The reason i think it is the control panel is because everything currently works from the drivers panel despite how it acted earlier and the door locks work fine from the other side now (both lock and unlock), yet the windows still don't work from any other door except the drivers.... so i am guessing that when i took the drivers door panel down and jarred everything... something might have "fixed" itself temporarily. What do you think? and if u agree, then where is a CHEAP place to find a replacement?

I have a similar problem and I took the whole switch pack out and actually did surgery on it (cut off the plastic to get to the switch stuff)...but the problem in in the circuitry....if you look at the posts here the harness through the door is a problem...it breaks in the middle.

Also on another post here, is a link to get service manuals and diagrams from another site....i got one for a 2000 XJ...and looked at it.

I think that can be useful. Anyway..pull the door panel off and disconnect the switch pack and see what happens.

i took the panel apart and i am certain that the suspect part is the drivers door switch panel more specificly the parantal control thingie... where is the best place to find a replacement without having to go to the dealership and spend a ton of money?

Mine is the same thing, but I tried to bypass it with a jumper but have not found the right wires yet. I tried to make it stay in the position with a fabrication that disables it in the non lockout position.

However, I just got some diagrams for this, but they don't cover that circuit. On mine, the drivers switch still operates the RF window, but the RF switch won't operate the RF window, only the LH switch does.

I can use some help here too. Haven't had the time to test on it yet.

yeah we both seem to have the same problem... i will get back to you on the purchase of a replacement part provided that i find something... if nothing else, the junkyard is bound to have something. For now, i have shaken the crap out of the drivers switch panel so that all switches work on all the doors and as long as i don't touch the child lock switch... i am good to go... but no doubt that this is a temporary fix.

AC Delco offers the replacement part. For my 97 4dr, the part number is c6252a. at www.rockauto.com it is 172 for the 4dr and about 90 for the 2dr. i am not sure if advanced or auto zone has it but it is worth checking but i am sure they are comparable in price. So that being said, i am going to be looking for one in the bone yard or die trying.

That's kul....but I just spent 3 hours out there working on it and It is not the switch. I took it apart (surgery, cut off the back) and tested it with a DVOM....all the parental lock button does is a momentary contact... I did not trace where it went, probably a computer.

Put it all back together....still not working....so pulled up the left door harness where it connects at the left kick panel. I cut part of the wrapping away and then pulled it up past the hood release cable and now it is all working again...LH and RH switches work the RH window....Yay!!! Did not see the actual break or such....but I tie-wrapped it place like that. Could still be the switch too...because my parental control switch doesn't work anymore....OH well, don't need it.

ON the lock switch...mine was doing the same thing...then I read your problem again....I think it is supposed to be like that...so you don't lock your keys in when the ignition is on. The remote control works properly when the ignition is on...so I wasn't too concerned....but then I remembered that feature.

Let me know what you find....I have two Cherokees.
